FROM BLACK and white to a world of colour, Avijit Dutta brings the realm of the mind to his artistic journey. His imagery has been interpreted as part of his ongoing experiments in exploring new expressions in pictorial forms and in this he has made an identifiable place for himself. His works reveal a successful mixture of the traditions he inherits and his personal thinking of life and the world around him.
The formal and thematic content of his paintings expresses a constant wandering into a world of fantasy, but this is only one facet of his art. Reality is never far from his canvas, executed by the lyricism of the brush and pigment.
Mirror on moods
His show titled `Expressions' is full of subjects that have been immaculately handled in irresistible colours. "The colours, the textures and the people in my paintings speak about the various characters, moods and expressions placed in various environments," says Dutta.
Voluptuous female figures act as foils for humans in the paintings titled `Awaiting.' Young women are portrayed in diverse figural gestures in splashes of gold against abstract or atmospheric backgrounds with the black moon as a metaphor of his own present life.
The characters often floated, sat or stood with a diagonal tilt in relation to the frame's rectangular field. Women, children, a bard, old men and kathputli puppeteers convey through their expressions longing, dreams, lost memories, awaiting, thought and tradition. Equally striking is `Hope' with butterflies and birds on supple bamboo branches as relief. The `Thinker' perhaps is his most striking work both in terms of colour and expression. Filled with sunflowers, black and white portraits of young children and Rodin's Thinker, it has a definite tone of brushwork.
Varied media
Dutta's use of mixed media - from oils to tempera and watercolour form a narrative pattern. Extreme earthiness infused by exoticism of form and colour underlines this show.
Dutta feels and expresses the feeling of wanderlust, journeying from the world of reality into fantasy. His characters are from everywhere and his canvases are reminders of many things at a time, including the emotions that bind us all.
The exhibition is open between 10.30 a.m. and 7 p.m. till December 19 at the Kalakriti Art Gallery, Road No: 10, Banjara Hills.
