Shimmer and symmetry: Bobby and Manju Grover's mantra this winter
INSPIRATION IS the key to fashion and this season the keys seem to be lying somewhere in the African sands.
In fact, the trend started with the Fashion Week early this year at Delhi when Ranna Gill brought Moroccan kaftans to Indian ramps. Recently JJ Valaya's winter collection also presented a dash of African motifs and kafantisque cuts in kurtas in his fall-winter collection.
Now Bobby and Manju Grover are treading the same path where the designer duo identifies with the younger brigade, also a must for the senior couturiers nowadays. Said to be inspired by spiritual iconography like Turkish evil eye brought to life here by Monikangna and a tribal imagery from African motifs presenting an amalgam of native tones and western silhouettes.
Says Bobby: "Winter is all about festivities, parties and celebrations, hence embellishments, shimmer and shine hold the key to this collection."
Embroideries as usual are inspired by geometrics. From circular to linear to asymmetrical it is a matter of pick and choose according to the taste.
Manju talks of increasing body consciousness and free spirited feel and it reflects in ponchos and kaftans that fulfil the twin designer demands. Shirts in georgettes matched with toned fitted pants in dupion silk also attract attention. For those looking to go for a more ornamental presence in their outfits, there are evening saris embroidered in sparkle with sleek blouses in contemporary cuts. However, fine detailing on the neck and sleeve keep them in touch with the `feminine' past. The colour palette ranges from rusts, burgundy, dark beiges, to black and oranges capturing the spirit of the season.
