Haute goes cool

Get ready to be dazzled with Anshu Modi's summer collection

THE EYE is dazzled - and that is not only because of the scorching heat, but also because of Anshu Modi's sizzling summer collection. The queen of bridal wear for the past 22 years has brought a wonderful line for the style conscious Hyderabadi.

Anshu, whose strength lies in intricate detailing, has brought creations that showcase her signature style. In an eye-popping range from Zardozi and Bandani to Kalamkari and Chikankari, each outfit is guaranteed to make a bride feel extra special on her big day. The lehengas with tone on tone embroidery, gold leafs and rich Mughal designs, ensures a princess bride effect.

For the summer, Anshu says she brought "traditional outfits as well as funky, party wear for the cool Hyderabadi." While conventional reds and maroons rule the bridal line, there are lovely saris in pinks, peach and other pastel colours.

"Everything depends on the wearer and her mood," the soft-spoken Calcutta-based designer says with a smile even as she explains the finer details of an absolute darling of a chiffon with strings of pearls in varying sizes that makes for a dramatic pallu.

"There are chiffon saris and ghaghras with glitter embroidery which gives the zardosi effect but is not so heavy and just right for evening wear." There are elaborate ghaghras with sequins, crushed dupattas, mirror work and crystals to be teamed with equally intricate cholis and there are also simple gypsy skirts with a divine belt embellished with cowry shells that can be teamed with a choli and dupatta if you want to go oriental or with the smartest chiffon ponchos this side of the Suez if you want to go occidental.

"My outfits are completely accessorised - from the bags and shoes to the jewellery," Anshu comments indicating the smart evening bags that range from the naughty to the nice and the coordinated jhootis and jewellery.

Men need not feel left out, as there is a range of formal wear with just a kiss of embroidery so they would not look as if they have stepped out of a Karan Johar film. Anshu is also displaying her range of furnishings. The bedspreads with matching cushion covers in cotton, silk and jute make them ideal wedding gifts.

The whole package is designed to pamper and as the wise poet said the best way to resist temptation is to yield to it so what are you waiting for?
