BLACK to the FRONT

The classic colour black is for all times

IT'S MYSTICAL and magical; bewitching and bold; foreboding and terribly fashionable; dark, daring, devilish and diabolical and in your wardrobe - very de rigueur. It is most alluring and more-than-most avant-garde. It is sinfully sexy and soberly sombre. It is the colour of graduation and at the same time of glamour. It's black and yes, it's back.

Back? But did it really go anywhere? Nah! A colour that defines timelessness and classicism, and a colour as immortalised as black and white pictures - where can it be, but lurking in the dark recesses of your almirah, only to step out honourably, time and again, with new accents and new definitions. And this time, there is a whole new palette to choose from. Watch the colours of the night and take your cues. From dusky to smoky, to jet to inky, to sooty to ashen.

Still confounded? Then let Rani Mukherji and the Big Bachchan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ode to darkness "Black", show you the light. From black to blacker with all the shades of grey along the way - is the way to do the colour this season. Combine different textures and fabrics to create a chiaroscuro of illusion - matt of velvet and shiny of leather, sparkle of lurex and slink of silk, glitter of metallic and sobriety of linen - go the whole hog - mix and match.

Wear it best in a low-slung fitted pant in a heavy matte linen, narrow-bottom for the classicist and with a hint of a boot cut, for the trendy. Combine it with a fitted tee in lycra with a trace of lurex. And sling over a knee-length achkan-like easy unobstructed coat in a self-stripe. For maximum effect, accentuate with hints of silver - slinky chains in neck, or around the waist or chunky antique silver jewellery. For even more allure, surprise people with one accessory in shocking pink - a handbag or a belt or a watch-strap. Finish to perfection with shiny leather boots. Shiny gelled and neatly pulled back hair, smoky eye make-up and nude glossy lips - and there you are - mystical like carbon and sparkling like diamonds.
