Beauty and bliss

Pamper yourself with the latest treatments in a romantic ambience at Sanctuary Spa, the new entrant to Chennai's wellness club

SOOTHING AMBIENCE At Sanctuary Spa

There's a tap running somewhere, and it worries my friend. After all, the sound of running water triggers off the conservationist in us. But it can be soothing too, even for Chennai-ites. "It's the three senses, sound, smell, and sight, that are so important," explains Pamela Poroda, founder, Sanctuary Spa. "Massage anyway takes care of `touch'."

It's the detailing (like a ceramic flute instead of a shower nozzle) and consideration that makes Sanctuary Spa, which already runs two day-spas in Sri Lanka, such a well turned out debutante to the Chennai wellness club. Sanctuary Spa is housed in a 200-year-old building, restored with great taste. In fact, it was the love of colonial houses that brought the two collaborative teams of Jennifer Thomas and Mita Banker of Studio Profile and Pamela Poroda and Sophie from Sanctuary Spas together.

With scented candles and rose petals strewn all over, the verandah was the venue for a cocktail evening for an exclusive little group of prospective clients. One of whom said she'd just returned from Colombo and spent the most blissful hours at Sanctuary Spa, and was delighted to have one in town now. I'm sure it wasn't a consideration for her. But if I were paying Rs.1,000 for a manicure, I unfortunately would have to rethink my Sri Lankan plans.

Spa packages

But it's not just a manicure or a pedicure, says a friendly Sri Lankan manager. It's a massage, a sandal wood scrub followed by a soothing clay wrap. Spa packages include `Simply Slimming', a full-five-day programme for 6,400 that includes not just treatments and a light exercise routine, but a diet menu that includes (hold your breath) ice cream! There's also a `Perfect Escape for Two', where you're promised to be pampered, not just with the treatments, but also with the romantic ambience and even champagne on the house.

"We've brought over four of our top therapists from Sri Lanka," says Pamela. "And this has made my clients back home unhappy." Says Pamela. It's a relationship that is quite dear to her customers, some of whom refuse to be treated by anyone else other than their regular therapist. They are hoping to rebuild such bonds here in Chennai and at the next spa at Thiruvananthapuram which should be running by the end of the year.
