Kuteera promises to bring rare traditional crafts to the fore

DIVINE HANDWORK Bhuta ritual idols from coastal Karnataka
Kuteera 2006 promises to be a very unique handicraft exhibition with many firsts to its credit. Kuteera will bring to Bangalore for the first time Bhuta ritual masks of coastal Karnakata, in brasses and bronzes. The traditional salaaki gombey or wooden rod puppets pared down to smaller sizes as children's puppets.
Seal of excellence
Bringing all this to craft lovers will be national award winning crafts persons. The Crafts Council of Karnataka, which is organising the event, has tied up with UNESCO that provides a seal of excellence on craft products. Kuteera 2006 will feature three of the winners of this seal from Karnataka — IndusTree, Maya Organic and Sandur Kushala Kendra. IndusTree's vegetable-dyed kora grass mat won this seal of excellence, while Maya Organic's eco-friendly lacquer-painted wooden toys and Sandur's Lambani embroidery on home furnishings have won this distinction.
North Karnataka's Kinhala woodware products, Yakshagana puppets, ganjifa cards, the salaaki gombey aata puppets from Magadi and Ramnagara areas are some of the prominent crafts from Karnataka that will feature in the exhibition, says Geetha Rao, Convenor of Kuteera.
Including Karnataka artists, around 25 craft units from all over the country will participate in Kuteera.
Garden products also promise to be appealing accessories at the exhibition. Terracotta planters furniture and contemporary and traditional garden pieces in stone will be on display and sale.
Kora grass mats, wool and silk carpets, silk bedspreads, embroidered bolster and cushion covers will be part of the series of soft furnishings.
Chittara, Tanjore and Kalamkari paintings, brass hanging lamps and many more natural fibre and handmade products will be available.
The exhibition is being sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) and the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The exhibition will be on from January 4 to 12 at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat on Kumara Krupa Road, between 10 a.m and 7 p.m. For details call 55305029.
