Go green to win

It pays to be eco-friendly

Here is a chance to do something for mother earth and win exciting prizes in the bargain by joining the Volvo Adventure Competition, which in partnership with the United Nations Environment programme recognises and rewards practical environmental action taken by young people in their community. The global Internet-based environmental-education programme for school children aged between 10 and 16 is aimed at increasing the environmental expertise.

To register for the award, teams will have to log onto the Volvo Adventure on www.volvoadventure.org and register on-line to help start their environmental project. For further information, schools can also call the helpline on 080 - 55336419 between 10 am and 5 pm on any working day. The last day to submit projects is January 31.

Groups entering an environmental project could win an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the Volvo Adventure Conference in Sweden, present their environmental project and practical action to a jury of international experts, win a $10,000, $6,000 or $4,000 to fund their environmental project, show their project to the world by publishing it on the Volvo Adventure Project or contribute to a handbook of practical environmental action.

In 2004, a team representing National Public School won the award with an innovative project aimed at reducing pollution caused by burning leaves. They worked to influence people to adopt vermicomposting as an alternative.

They also used this approach to empower women in villages by providing them an alternative source of income through vermicomposting.
