Their own brand of music

The three-member boy band Null Friction bagged almost all the prizes at Unwind Center's recent contest

STORMING THE UNDERGROUND Ansh, Abhishek and Shreyans of Null Friction

They've had many mysterious names — from `The Teletubbies' to `White Fingers' to `Broken Bridge', this three-member boy band has always displayed a fetish for new identification tags. For the present, they're called Null Friction. Its latest name has proved most lucky.

The three — lead guitarist and vocalist Shreyans Jha, bass guitarist Abhishek Singhal and drummer Ansh Sanyal — are Class XII students but have won Underground, an essentially college level rock concert organised by the Unwind Center. Out of the 19 bands that participated, they were the `Last Band Standing'. Null Friction swept the board, winning the prizes for best rock band, best acoustic band, best original composition in acoustic (for their song `Somehow'), best rock vocalist (Shreyans) and best bassist in acoustic (Abhishek).

The band was formed late last year and, in this short period, it has managed many things — 10 concerts, a music CD called World Wide Quiet that features four original compositions, two-day performance for World Space at Spencer's Plaza to promote the satellite radio and a special performance on Madras Day.

Early days

Classmates and friends Shreyans and Abhishek first woke up to the possibility of forming a band. Together, they were looking out for a drummer. Their search ended when they discovered their classmate Ansh's ability to beat out a roll on just about anything. After the band had come into existence, Shreyans and Abhishek were in for a shock. Ansh revealed he was no drummer. But from the way the youngster played, nobody could guess. His partners concluded that if the self-taught drummer continued to learn through observation, there would be no problem.

All three write lyrics and their themes are what you would expect from teenage lyricists. Their first song, `Somehow' (written by Shreyans) is about any relationship. There is a question at the end of every paragraph. The three composed music for this song in their school sports room. Abhishek's song `Always Kept In The Dark' is about dealing with the pressure that comes from within. Ansh's `All I Need' is more pessimistic as it cryptically concludes that suffering is all I have and suffering is all I need. The band's music can be defined as hard rock. They have been heavily influenced by Guns n Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Deep Purple and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Despite strong likes, they often choose to play music their own way. During Underground, they played their own version of Pink Floyd's `Brick In The Wall'. They enjoy creating own versions of songs that have appealed to them.
