CHORDS & NOTES
THE UNDERGROUND, DELHI – THE BEST OF WHAT’S NEXT
(Volume -1)
Saregama, Rs. 150
This one is a ground-breaking album in many senses. The effort from Saregama to bring to the fore some lesser know musicians is worth appreciation. But then again, since when did bands like Cyanide, Jalebee Cartel or even East India Company come unde
r the not-so-well-known category? Still, the album has a collection of some good and interesting songs. There are 10 musicians and a track by each one of them.
The Underground series is beyond genres or language. It does come as a surprise when a soft romantic track is followed by a rock number, which in turn is succeeded by a jazz ballad. The album opens with a pure instrumental track, “The Journey” by Kapil Srivastava, founder of Guitarmonk, a training institute. With the guitar as the main base, the piano mergers into the song and as a result we have a soothing winner.
Toeing the lines of MLTR is “The Wind” by Thomas Tajo, a visually impaired singer. The soft romantic number has a nice feel to it. “1000 Miles” by Oritus is a rock track with a streak of melody. “Virtual Love” by Sawan Dutta is the next song. A fast-paced jazz-rock ballad is how she describes it. In this era of World Wide Web, it talks about cyber romances. The energy her voice can generate is outstanding and gets the song some brownie points.
“Khuda Kushi” by Milli Bhagat is a very global sounding number with an Indian soul. The vocals start only a minute into the song, which makes it seem semi-instrumental. East India Company has come up with another masterpiece with “OMO”. The classical alap prelude blends into the soft guitar and leads the listener into the song — worth a repeat. “Jhuki Jhuki”, a track by Aditya Tripathi (and not by East India Company as previously reported), is a typical Indi-rock number.
“In or Out” by Jalebee Cartel is a typical electro and techno street track, and has all the elements that made the band a hit abroad.
“Animal” by Radius Feat.AX and “Tomorrow” by Cyanide are hard-core rock songs of the kind you get to hear these days.
