Multi-tasker Kavya Madhavan

Lyricist Kavya Madhavan created quite a stir when one of her compositions was tuned for the Prithviraj-starrer ‘One Way Ticket.’ Now the doe-eyed actor says she plans to release a CD of her songs. And one of the songs has been sung and co mposed by her.

“I have been learning Carnatic music for the last eight years and I have won prizes in Kathakali Sangeetham. So, it is not as if I became a singer overnight. My music teacher Tom Master’s dream is to make me sing for the Chembai music festival at Guruvayur. But I am not confident enough,” she says.

Even poetry, she says, was something she began writing when she was a student of Class nine.

Strange experience

“One of my friends at my dance class told me that I had an admirer who was fond of me. Apparently, he made it a point to be at the places or functions that I was scheduled to attend. Later, this friend would tell me that he had told her what I had worn that day, my hair style, what I spoke and so on. I was intrigued by this person I had not met, seen or heard. Many months later, I was told that he had died. My first poem was on this strange experience,” says Kavya.

Soon, other verses that came into her mind was captured on paper and there it remained till she decided to cut a CD of her poems.

“I had recorded two of the songs composed by two young music directors Arun and Anup. During the shoot of ‘Kangaroo,’ Raju [Prithviraj] heard me hum those songs and so he asked me if one of the songs could be used in his film. I thought it would be of help to those young composers and so I agreed,” she says.

However, she says, a trifle wistfully, that the song has been marred by bits and pieces of rap and snatches of English.

“My CD will stay true to my compositions. There is a song on Lord Krishna, a mother’s song for a child and so on…”

Actor, dancer, lyricist, singer … what else.

“Well, I also paint and do a little of embroidery. I refuse to believe people who tell me that they have no time for something. I firmly believe that you make time for all the activities you really enjoy doing. I usually take my paints and paintings to my location. Once, after a late shoot, I came to my room and painted for more than an hour before I even removed my make-up,” says the actor who has a clutch of movies in the pipeline.
