Raring to go Amrita Thapar

For this former Miss India Universe 2005, glamour and fame is only a short-lived concept. Amrita Thapar who moved into the glamour world by accident, says that an Indian woman is never complete with the beauty. “She has to be educated, should be intelligent, have a good knowledge of our traditional values and culture, and most importantly be kind hearted,” says she.

The five-foot-eight-inches tall beauty says that she has a number of offers for films both from the Bollywood and from the industry in the south, but is waiting for the right script and the role. “I would like to launch my film career with a role that is meaningful and has a strong social message, and obviously it has to be the lead role,” says Amrita.

Though she is open to films in Bollywood or in the south, she appears to have a special liking for Aamir Khan and Allu Arjun. “I have a taste for Telugu films as I stayed in Guntur for three years in my younger days. I knew to speak the language but due to lack of practice I have forgotten it. I still buy music CDs of Telugu films and hear them at my leisure.”

A post-graduate in fashion designing from NIFT, Amrita is keen to launch her own designer label. Though she believes in ethnic designs and fusion wears, the charming designer is more inclined towards kids wear. “I love kids, and I won two awards during my study at the NIFT on kids wear. Designing is my passion and priority. Once I finish all my pending assignments, I shall concentrate on this aspect.”

Talking of her modelling career, she says that she walked into it by accident. “During my college days, I was picked up by Radhika Rao for a music album, and later went on to do another for Pankaj Udhas. That was when I strode into the modelling world and the rest was history,” says she.

Initially, she was chosen as Miss Pune, and in 2005, she was selected to represent India in the Miss Universe contest.

She declares that the contest was a learning experience for her but it hasn’t changed her outlook. “Name and fame has not got into my head,” she asserts.

She is actively involved in many social activities. Amrita is part of the organisation run by Pankaj Udhas that works for the cause of thalassemia. “We organise ghazal nights world over to raise funds for the cause.” She has also been actively involved with the cause of cancer and HIV/AIDS.

The former Miss India, rides high both on glamour and creativity. Apart from being a fashion designer, she is a painter. “My favourite medium is charcoal and much-loved motif is ‘Ganesha’. At times my motif reflects on my designs,” says the beauty queen.

Being a fitness freak, she sweats it out in the gym on a daily basis, with a regular routine of yoga and pranayama. “I also dedicate some time for swimming and practice kick boxing to keep myself fit.” Amrita is also a part of the youth team for the Commonwealth Games. Despite a strict exercise schedule, she does not believe in the latest fad of ‘size zero’, and advocates that women should be proportionate to their height and weight.
