Cloning for fun

Genetic engineering is one of the latest developments in biotechnology. The technique of cloning is developing day by day and now there is so much talk of human beings being cloned.

Recently, in a lighter vein, we conducted a poll based on cloning. It was for the students of Std. XII, who need a break from their busy schedule. Who would they like to be cloned as out of a given list of professionals and social activists? They also had to identify their role models in each category. We had a total of 86 enthusiastic participants. The results are shown below (Profession — Votes polled — Role Models). Look out for surprises!

Lawyer/ Judge - 0 - None; Historian/ Archaeologist - 0 - None; Author -1 - Arundathi Roy; Journalist -1 - V. K. Madhavankutty; Visual media personality - 2 - Cyrus Barucha; Industrialist -5 - Bill Gates; Social Worker - 5 - Mother Teresa; Actor - 6 - Hrithik Roshan; Educationist - 7 - Shanta Varma; Doctor - 7 Dr. Christian Bernard; Politician - 9 - Indira Gandhi; Scientist/ Mathematician - 9 - Albert Einstein; Sportsperson - 10 - Sachin Tendulkar; NRI businessman -11 - Swaraj Paul; Musician - 13 - K.J. Yesudas.

I would like to make a few observations on the results. Albert Einstein was selected as the role model in the category of scientists. If we were to be cloned and starts on his inventions, our students would have an even tougher time learning physics. Indira Gandhi is the role model in the politicians' category. Our girls must have made sure of this choice. In the educationists' category they voted for our beloved teacher, Mrs. Shanta Varma. That was a good one! If she were to be cloned our students would have the best results ever.
