On human feelings

"Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought," says the poet Shelley. Man loves happiness and shuns sorrow. Life is full of suffering and sorrowThere are usually more tears than smiles and tears touch us more deeply than laughter . A tragedy leaves a deeper effect than a comedy. What touches our heart has a deeper and lasting impression. Shelley says those songs or other creations of art which deal with a tragic theme invites a richer response from us than lighter subjects. Their expression in song or verse have a poignant effect on man.
