Dream or warning?

It was D-day. Our std X matriculation board exam results were to be announced. My friends and I were anxiously awaiting our results. I had an aim from my kindergarten class to be the school topper in the matriculation board exam and have my name printed on the board at the entrance of our school. The expected results did come like a flash and left me zapped.

I was the only person to have failed in the second language `Hindi' — in fact my favourite subject! I was ashamed of my poor performance and tears rolled down my cheeks.

I closed my eyes due to dizziness and when I opened them, I woke up startled and sweating all over at my worst nightmare. Then I was only half way through my tenth standard and was indeed working very hard with fear at the back of my mind.

My teachers and my parents always motivated me, and they encouraged me telling that I was capable of getting a state rank. But my nightmare always terrified me and I worked hard and attended all the special classes in Hindi.

On the day of examination I was well prepared and had written my papers well and was confident of good results. The waiting period seemed longer and painful. So and behold, when the results were announced it left me spell-bound. I had secured the top position in my school with the total of 1027/1100 marks, centum in Maths and was the subject topper in Hindi. But this was not all. The principal told me that I had secured State Third Rank in Hindi! My joy knew no bounds when my friends and teachers congratulated me. I couldn't believe my eyes. I cried when the newspapers showed a photograph of mine along with my marks, highlighted. Everybody in my neighbourhood congratulated me. My parents were very proud of me.

I was rewarded with seven medals, two trophies and a rolling cup in the Annual Day function in our school.
