Learning from food chains
Our school conducted an educational exhibition. We chose the topic food chain. This deals with the transfer of energy between the groups of living organisms.
Basically two types of food chains are recognised: the grazing food chain and detritus food chain. At first we started to explain about grazing food chain. The grazing food chain starts with green plants and ends with carnivores via herbivores.
The producers are the green plants, which prepare their own food in the presence of sunlight. So they are also called as Autotrophs.
The herbivorous animals eat either plants or the plant products. The carnivores eat the herbivorous animals. The grazing food chain ends with the tertiary consumer.
The next food chain is detritus food chain. This consists of decomposers like fungi and bacteria. These live on the dead matter of the organism and decompose the organic matter and convert to in organic matter, which is helpful for plants to prepare their food.
Hence from the food chain model we can understand: That each organism directly or indirectly depends on other organisms for their food; The pattern of flow of energy in the ecosystem; The maintenance of ecological balance.
We enjoyed working on it and learnt many facts while doing it. The educational exhibition gave us an opportunity to know that learning is fun.
