A day with senior citizens

Senior citizens deserve more respect because of their experience in life. They have to be treated with love and care but because of the negligence of their family, they are sent to homes that take care of such people.

There are many organisations rendering this service. Helpage India is an establishment that takes care of old people. Little Sisters of the Poor is another.

A visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor proved an eye-opener to us. It may appear that the elders are happy and peaceful in a serene atmosphere. But deep in their heart is sadness about the betrayal by their own children.

As students, we were called upon to extend our help. To celebrate Ramzan and New Year, we made a visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor. We entertained them with cultural items like song, dance and drama and provided them with lunch.

Spending some time with elderly people made us really happy. We realised that old people have to be showered with love and affection.

Many in our society failed to understand that it is their duty to take care of their parents as they were taken care when were young. They failed to understand that the same might happen to them.

Elders may have been neglected as the present generation. But as the members of the future generation, it is our duty to take care of our parents and elders.
