Bit of blue silk

ASHA NEHEMIAH

When mother bought the blue silk, she wanted to make something special. But would she stitch it for Deepa, Arun or Tina?

Mother bought a bit of blue silk from the shop. "I think," she said, feeling the lovely, shiny cloth, "that I will make a dress for Deepa with this blue silk."

Father and Mother had three children. Deepa was the oldest. Arun was next. He was ten years old. Tina was the youngest.

Mother took out her sewing basket. It had needles, thread and a pair of scissors in it. She put the blue silk on the table and stitched a dress from it.

Deepa put on the dress. "Oh no, mother," Deepa said. "This dress is too long for me."

"Don't worry, dear," said Mother. "I will cut off a bit and the dress will fit you nicely."

So Mother took out her scissors and cut off a bit a silk from the bottom of the dress. Deepa put on the dress again, "Oh no mother," she shook her head. "Now the dress is too short. I can't wear such a short dress." "Hmm," said mother, "Then I will make it into a silk shirt for Arun."

Snip, snip went mother's scissors and soon the shirt was ready.

Arun put on the shirt. "Mother!" he said, "This shirt is too big. So big and loose that I think three children can fit into it."

So mother cut off a bit of silk from this side and another bit of silk from that side. This time the shirt was so tight that Arun couldn't get it over his head.

"No problem," said mother, "I will make this shirt into a fine silk blouse for Tina." Tina was so happy. But when she put on the blue silk blouse, she found that one sleeve was long and the other sleeve was short.

Snip, snip went mother's scissors. This time, the front of the blouse was shorter than the back.

Snip, snip went Mother's scissors. This time the right side was longer than the left side.

Snip, snip. Snip, snip. Snip, snip.

Soon there was no blouse at all.

"Oh dear," said mother sadly. "I wanted to make something very nice with my bit of blue silk.

"I wanted a blue silk dress," said Deepa.

"I wanted a blue silk shirt," said Arun.

"And I wanted a blue silk blouse," said Tina bursting into tears.

"Don't worry," said Father looking at four sad faces. "I know how each of you can have something nice made of blue silk."

"How?" they asked. Father picked up the scissors. Snip, snip. Soon Deepa had a blue silk belt. Arun got a blue silk tie. And little Tina got a blue silk bow.

There was still a little bit of blue silk left over for Father to make two hankies. One for himself and one for mother.

Every one was happy! .
