It was a conglomeration of nearly 4,000 budding artists and craftsmen. The event was none other than the annual arts and crafts competition, which is being held for the 28th year, at the TVS Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, TVS Nagar, Madurai.
The competition was organised by the Jeyceerettes wing of Madurai Jaycees sponsored by the Asian Paints (India) Limited. The competition comprised 12 disciplines including drawing and colouring, cartoon drawing, clay modelling, paper work, embroidery, carving (including vegetable carving), artificial flower making, art from waste, collage, rangoli and face painting.
"While the drawing and colouring section attracted 2,400 participants, the new addition face painting drew 22 registrations," says Gnanasekar, president, Madurai Jaycees. "In this year's competition, students studying in different colleges in the city were allowed to take part in the competition. But they were restricted only to the face-painting segment. Another feature this year is that participation certificates were being given to the students. While most sections were for all students, collage competitions were only for Std. XI and XII, rangoli for Std. IX-XII, and face painting for students of Std. XI and XII."
