The story of the Modern Alladin...
|
Imagination turned musical.
Wacky. Neat. Imaginative. These three words would adequately describe "Alladin - A Fresh Look", a musical put together by a group of eight and nine-year-olds with just four days of "theatre education" behind them.
On April 23 at the Unwind Centre, these kids were putting to test the skills they had acquired from a just-concluded four-day workshop conducted by theatre man Freddy Koikaran under the auspices of the music school.
The musical turned the original story of the intrepid adventurer on its head, borrowed from the Disney's celluloid version of the same and accommodated some contemporary images. The result: the audience was in splits.
The 45-minute show had Alladin waffling with the Sultan's daughter Mona over MSN chat, Sachin Tendulkar putting in an appearance, the Sultan setting up a new chain of Pizza Corners, the genie conjuring up a Videocon washing machine for Alladin's mother, a mini-genie pitting itself against the traditional one and finally Alladin and Mona settling for a registered marriage.
Anila Subramanyam was the brain behind the sets and costumes. Saroop Oommen and Lydia Baskaran penned the script. Saroop took care of the music as well.
