Incredible tales

NIMI KURIAN

The adventures of Professor Shonku are fascinating and intriguing.

Finding the diaries of Professor Trilokeshwar Shonku was a stroke of luck. And for the readers of Sandesh it was the most interesting thing that could have happened to them. The first story The Diary of a Space Traveller appeared in the magazine and it was so popular that 40 more followed it!

Now Puffin brings out two books with the exploits of Professor Shonku. The stories are as diverse as they are interesting. Shonku's scientific experiments are fantastic and his discoveries even more so. The good professor lives in a small town called Giridih. Scientists around the world acknowledge Shonku's brilliance and he gets invitation to seminars and conferences. So he travels extensively, and as you follow his journeys from Egypt to Switzerland to the far corners of Tibet you learn about different countries and different cultures. You meet villainous scientists, crooks, diabolic machines and curious artefacts that keep you on edge wanting to get to the bottom of things.

His neighbour Avinash Babu is very suspicious of the Professor and his experiments. He visits almost every day and his comments and observations are indeed hilarious. But soon Avinash Babu begins to accompany Shonku on his travels and after the first incident — Professor Shonku and the Radiant Fish, he is ready for more exciting expeditions. Infact in one such incident Shonku was lucky to have Avinash Babu as a companion because he turned out to be the hero saving Shonku and seven other scientists trapped in a mysterious island in the Pacific Ocean.

The stories are out of the ordinary and Ray's imagination is wild.

The Diary of a Space Traveller and Other Stories, The Unicorn Expedition and Other Stories by Satyajit Ray, Puffin Original, Rs. 250 each.
