Old gold

A 1,900 Indian gold coin is expected to fetch up to $ 27,000 at an auction. The coin shows an early depiction of the Buddha. The size of a fingernail, it shows the Buddha on one side and Kanishka I on the other. It dates from Kanishka's rule in the first quarter of the second century. There are only four such coins. "Kanishka... ruled over a multi-ethnic society in northern India and central Asia. He later embraced Buddhism" said Tom Eden of Specialist Coin auctioneers Morton and Eden Ltd., who will conduct the sale in November. "He was the first ruler to issue coins bearing the image of the Buddha."
