She defied norms to change the face of education in Thrissur.
WORTHY TEACHER: Nalini Chandran
Nalini Chandran, the founder Principal and the present Director of Hari Sri Vidya Nidhi School, Thrissur is the first Keralite to win the Derozio Award. The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations has instituted the award for exemplary service to school education and human enrichment. Henry L.V Derozio, taught English at the present Presidency College, Kolkota and inspired many freedom fighters.
The Derozio award commemorates the life of the great revolutionary who enthused a young generation for the service of the nation. Born in an aristocratic family in Palakkad, Nalini Chandran is a product of Cathedral & John Connon Girls' School, and Elphinstone College, Mumbai. She has a natural flair for teaching. She is a qualified dancer, choreographer, dramatist, and a writer of stories for children. Married to Lt. Col. Chandran, she worked in schools, took active part in Army Welfare centres across India.
Later, she founded Hari Sri Vdya Nidhi School.
Currently she is the honorary director of Sandeepani Vidya Nikethan, Thrissur, and the President of 'Thalam', a cultural trust in Kerala.
"My aim in life has been to see that women are given their rightful place in society, to constructively channelise youth potential, to instil pride in the dignity of labour, and respect for our elders." She has won many awards like the Charter of Honour (by the Indian Medical Association, Thrissur) and The Manorama-Air India BOLT Award.
