India Post issued a 15-rupee commemorative stamp in 2003 to celebrate the golden jubilee of the ascent of Mount Everest.

In 1953, an expedition led by Col. John Hunt, a British army officer, with two team members — Tenzing Norgay, a sherpa mountaineer and Edmund Hillary, succeeded in reaching the summit.
