A collection of funny incidents from Bond's life.
|
There is a certain magic that Ruskin Bond unleashes upon his readers every time. It is in his hands that the mundane events of the day transform into wealthy pieces of literature. That is his spell, and that is the author in the man.
Funny Side Up is his archetypal work of prose that can satisfy the booklover as also cause an unwitting reader to revel in its highly entertaining content.
The book, which claims to be an absorbing read for all ages, is a collection of funny incidents from Bond's life, spanning over his long illustrious career as a writer, and episodes from childhood he chooses to recall and share.
The setting is Dehra Dun and Mussoorie in most instances, where Aunt Mabel, Uncle Ken, Aunt Ruby, grandfather and grandmother figure in their characteristic elements. Granny's snappy kitchen proverbs are as hilarious as the exhilarating bike rides with Uncle Ken and the experience at sea with him, which spread over a couple of chapters. Ruskin's gallant overtures are equally amusing as he writes with flourish how the opposite sex the older they be, the greater their influence on him has been an integral part of his life. And there is so much more in the book about animals, monkeys in particular, and creepy crawlies like scorpions, which make their home in his, and apparently continue to fascinate him.
The book is also dotted with five poems, of which "If Mice Could Row" will be every child's dream.
