Automobiles mark a century

VIKAS S. KHATRI

On the 100th anniversary of the automobile, Tanzanian postal authorities issued a set of stamps showing the 1936 - 20/25. 1933- Phantom II, 1926 - Phantom I and the 1907 - Silver Ghost Rolls Royce models.

Probably the most renowned name in the history of motoring was first heard in 1907. But three years prior to this, Henry Royce was making small 10 h.p. cars. The Hon. C.S. Rolls, who was in the Motor Agents business, heard about the Royce cars and was so impressed by them that he agreed to sell all that Royce could build. And so it was that the first Rolls Royce car was manufactured. It was a 48 h.p. Silver Ghost, much bigger than Royce's earlier models. Unfortunately the partnership did not last long.
