Keep up with the Joneses

A Welsh town is planning to hold the world's biggest get-together of Joneses. Blaenau Ffestiniog wants to break the record for the largest gathering of people with the same name, a title held by Sweden for a gathering of 583 Norbergs. The town, along with Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, intends to fill the 1600-seat Wales Millennium Centre with Joneses on November 3 and will issue a call today for Joneses from around the world to turn up. Participants, who will have to show a passport or driver's licence, will be treated to a variety show. The show, "Jones! Jones! Jones!", will trace the name through music, comedy and dance. Blaenau was chosen to announce the appeal as it is home to the highest proportion of Joneses in Britain. The name Jones comes from the term "Son of John" but has also been attributed to the name Jonah, which is of Icelandic origins, suggesting a Viking connection. Gethin Jones, presenter of BBC children's television programme Blue Peter, said: "I'm extremely proud to be a Jones - it reflects my pride in my family's roots in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire in west Wales." Organisers hope singer Tom Jones will attend.
