Classroom fun
PAROMITA PAIN

A collection of stories about school days.

School means friends, fun, teachers and of course beastly homework. School stories aren't new and most have grown up on a steady diet of the St Clare's and Malory Towers stories and dreamed of midnight feasts. That's why The Puffin book of Classic School Stories, is a good read. The stories are an eclectic collection of tales that span a few centuries in literature and therefore time. From Tom Brown's School Days, Jane Eyre and What Katy Did, the narrative has also carefully chosen school episodes from David Copperfield and Malgudi Days. They point to the fun of school and various situations that may not necessarily be in the classroom that add to learning. Of course the funniest is the "William" and "Swami and Friends" chapters. Since the choice is wide, the tones vary and no two stories are the same. Only "In ambush" by Rudyard Kipling stands out for sheer monotony.
