Revolt in the fort
R. SOUNDARARAJAN
Early on the morning of June10, 1806, Indian soldiers stationed at the Vellore fort rose in revolt against the British. They killed some army officers and took control of the arms and ammunition. They then hoisted the royal tiger flag of Tipu Sultan, as the slain king's family was held captive inside the fort. They declared Fateh Hyder, Tipu's second son, as king.
But the uprising was soon crushed, and 800 soldiers were killed while 17 officers were hanged. Others were transferred to remote prisons.
To commemorate the bicentennial of this event India Post issued a five-rupee stamp. It features the Vellore Fort and symbolically represents the revolt.
