Art and culture

KABITA ROY

Brazil issued a stamp on May 25, 2000, to celebrate Africa Day. The stamp emphasises African art, remarkable features of which are apparent in the Brazilian culture. The stamp portrays the liveliness of the people who had a great influence on the Brazilians. The background is composed by the colours that appear in the flags of most African nations (red, yellow, green and black). The stamp also shows, in a stylised manner, the strongest features of the African culture — musical instruments, masks, handicrafts and adornments. The sum of all these elements gives us the idea of movement, music and creativity which comes from such an exotic continent. Africa is extremely rich in cultural expression.
