BEST FOOT FORWARD: Race to win.
It was a talent search of a different kind. It was a call for the best in sports. Winning would mean getting trained with the hope to excel. The event was the Rotary Chennai Olympiad 2006, an inter school athletic meet, organised by the Rotary International District 3230 and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) at the Nehru Outdoor Stadium. Students had come from Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai. Spread over three days, the event hosted track and field events. While Stds. VII, VIII and IX fell into the junior category, Stds. X, XI and XII went into the senior group.
Winners
The winners of the Junior long jump, A. Parameshwari (SBOA Junior College), Sophia Laurence (SBOA Matric) and S.B. Abinaya (Hindu S.S.S, Indira Nagar) who came first, second and third respectively were confident that their rigorous practice both morning and evening got them their medals. The senior team, K.A. Anandhi (SBOA Matric), Janet Shiney (Grace Maric, Ranipet, Vellore) and V. Twaritha (Good Shepherd) won the first, second and third places respectively. Janet Shiney who came first in the 100 mts and was adjudged the best athlete in the Senior Girls. Rajesh Kumar came second in the 1500 mts . K. Kanimozhi (first in the 600 mts.), M.S. Veidehi (third in the 400 mts.), S. Subashini, S. Sanjitham and P. Suganya who won the shot putt event did their school VDS Jain H.S.S., Tiruvannamali proud. Their coach said that the school encourages sports. As the final day of the meet drew to a close, medals, trophies and certificates were given out. Air Commodore, Air Officer Commanding Air Force Station, Avadi, G.R. Prasad was the chief guest and the event was presided over by Rtn. J.B. Kamdar, District Governor - R.I. Dist 3230.
S.B.O.A. Matric bagged the Junior Girls trophy while the Junior Boys went to S.B.O.A. Junior. In the Senior category, the Girls trophy was won by VDS Jain H.S.S.S., Tiruvannamalai while S.B.O.A. Junior took the Boys.
The Technical Director for the event, Mr. Valsan, noted that today's kids are more aware about the sport scenario and are keen to participate and win.
