Techie Taffy

PAROMITA PAIN

There is something about Chennai, known as Madras till the early 90's' isn't it? The endless beaches with their fine sand that feels like silk under bare feet, the salty air, and a university with the beach as its front yard — this is truly one special city that recently had its 367th birthday on August 22. The atmosphere was festive and Techie was quite taken up with the different walks and other stuff designed to mark the special bash.

Techie delved deep into the history of a place that has changed much and yet in so many ways has remained the same.

Visit the http://www.kutcheribuzz.com/themadrasday/index.htm site to understand how this birthday came about.

For a concise intro to the city's past visit http://www.bookrags.com/history/worldhistory/madras-ema-03/ that has a detailed and well-written backgrounder.

"The beginnings of the City of Madras go back to the earliest stages of English commercial enterprise in India," says the http://www.chennaicorporation.com/madras_history.htm that deals with the history of the city corporation. Read it to understand how the corporation of Chennai (previously Madras) the Oldest Municipal Institution in India established on September 29, 1688, came to be.

Read about the Armed forces of Madras at http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/LAND-FORCES/Army/Regiments/Madras.html and know more about their brave history.
