Memorial on granite
Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski dreamt of a memorial to honour American Indians and his plan was to carve a likeness of Crazy Horse, a Sioux Indian, on a granite mountain in southern Black Hills. Ziolkowski began work in 1948 but he died in 1982. His family led by his wife Ruth has continued his work. The project depends on admission fees and private help since Ziolkowski did not want to take government help for completion his family continues to hold on to that. With more than one million visitors annually, the project has seen the completion of Crazy Horse's face. A museum, education centre and restaurant complete the complex. Later this year, the Crazy Horse Memorial will launch its first national fund drive most probably on October 7, according to the development director Fred Tully. The main goal is to complete the carving and to put in place more cultural and educational programmes. Other projects are a dormitory to house the American Indian students who work at the memorial and to build a hall to highlight the achievements of Indian heroes.
