Bid for freedom

BACK HOME: After a failed attempt at freedom.

You can't say that Willy did not try. Willy, a 40-pound tortoise, took a shot at a free life a month ago. But life on the road ended recently when he was restored to his owner, Kellie Copeland. Copeland had reported Willy missing on July 1 and he was spotted just five miles away on August 20. His rescuer was a technician with an emergency medical service. Willy may have also created a new record for slow crawlers — five miles in six weeks averages 0.005mph. He's now back in the dog kennel in his owner's backyard. Aware that he can dig under the fence and make a new bid for freedom, Copeland said she'd keep an eye on him.
