ALL GEARED UP: Absolutely exciting.

The most important annual event in Allapuzha is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It began in 1952, when India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru visited. Held in August it features the gigantic snake-boats of Kerala, the chundans - one time the battleships. Today the Boat Race has grown into a major tourist event with boats being sponsored by different villages. Competition is severe as the boats with over 100 rowers in each, race to finish to the accompaniment of rousing music.
