Indian adventures

SHALINI UMACHANDRAN

Three books featuring four cousins who get together on holidays.

Though Dinu, Minu, Polly and Ravi are possibly among children's literature's most unimaginatively named characters, there's enough excitement in the books they live in to make you ignore the names. The four cousins have plenty of fun always managing to find themselves in the middle of a mystery. Shashi Deshpande's three books on their adventures make for quite a super read.

A Summer Adventure is the first of the books where Dinu, Minu and Polly's cousin Ravi comes to stay with them for the first time. During Diwali holidays and in The Haunted House the four cousins find themselves at their favourite uncle's house and searching for treasure that was buried by one of their ancestors'. There's no great originality in these books and their plots, but there's plenty of fun and characters are very real. The books are simply written and have touches of Indian English that make them so easy to relate to. But the author follows the Famous Five model faithfully.

3 Novels by Shashi Deshpande,
