R. SOUNDARARAJAN
October 9 is celebrated as World Post Day, because it was on that day in 1874 the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was founded.
Representatives from 22 countries who attended a conference at Berne, Switzerland, signed an agreement concerning international postal service.
Commonly known as the Berne Treaty, the agreement came into effect on July 1, 1875. The Berne convention, inter alia, provided for the formation of a single postal territory.
