Remembering Narayan

The article "Celebrating a centenary" is special because it talks of the maiden speech the great man made as a member of the Rajya Sabha. His intense interest in the welfare of children is written large in the speech.

A. Ranganathan,
Coimbatore

R.K. Narayan was one of the first Indians who decided very early in his life that writing was his profession. Most people laughed because they had not heard of a person wanting to live by his pen. They said, `it is all right as a hobby... but writing is no profession." But Narayan's idealism put Indian fiction writing on the world map.

I read with interest the article "Celebrating a centenary" and also R.K. Narayan's inaugural speech in the Rajya Sabha highlighting the issue of the "crushing burden of the heavy school bag". The response of the then Deputy Chairman that "the entire House associates with Mr. R.K. Narayan and that the whole country will notice it." I do not know how long ago this speech was made. But, to this day, we carry the same "weighty bag" to school with aching backs.
