Exciting discovery

WORKERS FROM THE HOUSTON MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCE: Prepare to remove a meteorite.

An unusual meteorite discovered in a Kansas wheat field has got scientists all excited. More than the actual discovery, it was the technique used that was the cause of the excitement. New ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was used to find the site, the object buried in the ground (in this case, at a depth of four feet) and make an accurate three-dimensional image. Similar systems were used in Antarctica earlier but scientists now hope to use the system on Mars' heavy soil to find meteorites or water there. Patricia Reiff, director of the Rice Space Institute, told AP, "It validates the technique so we can use something similar to that instrument when we go to Mars."
