Elvis and his little blue shoes

It's not suede, but Elvis' blue shoes fit his tiny feet perfectly. The little blue or fairy penguin is among the 18 second chance penguins living at the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Elvis and his friends were sent to Christchurch from Marineland in Napier, which rescues sick or injured animals and sends those that can't be returned to the wild to other animal centres. After arriving there, some penguins developed calluses on their feet, a common complaint in captivity. Penguins normally spend much of their time fishing in the sea and develop problems if they spend too much time on land. Treatment included saltwater footbath, ointment and footwear. The penguin fashion line, in blue and green, is tailor-made for the little feet and made of breathable material with light rubber soles. International Antarctic Centre director Richard Benton said, "We have seen a dramatic improvement and expect that they will only be wearing their pretty shoes for a very short time."
