Santa's wish

VIDYA VASUDEVAN

When Santa made his wish, little did he know that Wanda was listening.

When grandma arrived, Neetu was on her best behaviour but somehow complaints slipped out. "Mummy, why can't you get me a dress like Rita's?" "I wish you had made chocolate cake instead of plum cake?" Grandma gave a secret smile. "This Christmas Neetu will change. The complaints will stop," she said to herself. That night after dinner, Neetu went to grandma's room. "Neetu, do you kow how Santa got his hearty laugh?

Lazy Santa

"It was Christmas Eve and Santa was in a bad mood. He was tired of being Santa Claus. `I wish I had more rest during the Christmas season instead of travelling here and there with a heavy sack of gifts,' he thought. He lay down and slept.

Soon he felt something pushing against his back. It was Rudolph, reminding him it was time to start his sleigh. Angrily Santa pushed him away and began to snore. Jolly Santa had become lazy Santa. Several hours later Santa awoke, stretched, rubbed his eyes and yawned. `I wish I weren't Santa,' he said.

Wanda, the fairy, was passing by. Hearing Santa she waved her wand and immediately Santa's wish was granted. Santa was no longer Santa. The Santa whom everyone loved was gone. The new person looked fearsome and stern. `Hey Rudolph,' he called out, but Rudolph stepped back. He could not smile because his lips refused to smile.

Looking into the mirror Santa felt sad. `Oh! Why did I complain,' he thought. `When I was Santa everyone liked me. I wish I could become Santa again.' Wanda the fairy was watching. `Santa's learnt a lesson,' she thought. `Swish, swish' went her wand and Santa was back to his jolly old self. Happy and tearful, Santa thanked Wanda. Kindhearted Wanda waved her wand once more. Surprise! Surprise! Lucky Santa was rewarded with an extra dose of jolliness and that very special `ho, ho, ho' laugh so that children would know him better. "Grandma, I am glad that Santa became Santa again," said Neetu. "Oh dear, maybe Wanda the fairy is listening. There'll be no more complaints from me."
