Techie Taffy

PAROMITA PAIN

Techie knows it's Christmas and a new year is about to begin, but he felt this was the best time to explore how life was many years ago, especially for children.

Besides chocolates many other essential things were in very short supply during the World War II and concepts of rationing took on a whole new meaning.

Walk through the times on the BBC page at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/index.shtml with the smiley Vera. With her you can choose what you would like to do — visit a war time home and see how the rooms were done up, or read about war rations or even see some of the evacuee's letters. Techie chose to see a war home on the http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/home.shtml site first. A most exciting site, browsers will have to move their mouse over the objects and click on the highlighted stuff to learn more about them. Check out the lovely porcelain wash jugs in the children's bedrooms at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/warhome/warhome_childbed_ 04.shtml.

Dinner menus weren't exactly a treat during 1943. You can do your shopping at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/ration/ration_intro.shtml and find out more. There is more homework to do now but you will agree that life is easier. You can even print your own congratulations certificate from Vera at the end of the tour for eating wisely and doing your bit for the war effort at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/ration/certificate.shtml.

The research room at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ww2children/research/research_intro.shtml is a must visit. The rare photographs that show us how life was altered are a treat. The pages being a part of the BBC homepage show the lives of the English. Browse the net and see if you can get any info on how the Indians might have fared.
