Festival of harvest

R. SOUNDARARAJAN

India Post issued a special stamp in 2006 valued at Rs. 5 with Pongal as its motif. Pongal is celebrated in mid-January in Tamil Nadu. It is chiefly a harvest festival and is spread over a period of three days.

On the day of Pongal, offerings are made to the Sun God as thanksgiving. The next day, cows and bulls are adorned with garlands and kumkum and they are given special feed as a sign of gratitude for their work.

This is a festival full of life and colour.
