Bharat as a Republic

To commemorate the Republic of India, a set of four stamps was issued on January 26, 1950, in the denominations of two annas, three and half as., four as., and 12 as.

The two as. stamp in scarlet depicts a procession with fluttering flags and blowing trumpets. The three and half as. stamp in ultramarine, features a quill and inkpot, and palm leaf manuscripts. The four as. violet stamp depicts a plough and a ear of corn and the 12 as. maroon stamp, a charkha with a piece of hand-woven cloth. All these stamps, profile a boy and girl at the bottom left corner. For the first time, the word "Bharat" was introduced in this set of stamps.
