An elephant that has no qualms about wearing a checked tablecloth to school and ties her hair (bristles if you please) with a pink ribbon cannot be anything but fun and Alise is a wonderfully entertaining pachyderm. She is confident and can do arithmetic, sit on a wall, stand on her head and is a voracious reader. In short, she is all that a friend ever can be to nine-year-old Siddharth whose parents want him to be outdoors rather than sitting at home and reading.
Sid's parents are scientists and echo each other for effect. Sid is anything but the outdoor kind and is scared even of ants. Alise too has her fears. This is a story of a friendship that is wonderful. With Alise, Sid can be himself and his parents, though disapproving at first, learn to appreciate the association when they understand what Alise actually means to their son. The finale is an exciting one.
