The students of the Vocational Higher Secondary School, Payyoli, a rural centre near Kozhikode recently had something different to show off and to be truly proud of too. They went about the task with great enthusiasm and meticulous planning to showcase their literary endeavours through an exhibition of hand-written magazines.
As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the school the students organised an exhibition of 57 hand-written magazines at the school premises evoking the curiosity and wonder of the parents and the general public too. "The neatly compiled magazines have more than 3000 literary creations of students on a wide range such as poems, short stories, anecdotes and essays," says N.K. Preman who is the Malayalam teacher of the school, and who guided the students in getting the material ready for the exhibition.
Hard work
They are examples of the creativity of the students and their enthusiasm too. The magazines also contain travelogues, biographies, and plays written by the students.
It had taken a month and half to mount the exhibition. "What the students got up is a novel initiative. It is perhaps the first such literary attempt of school students in Kozhikode District. They have taken a lot of effort in collecting their literary pieces and compiling the entire material available, " says Ms. Nirmala Kandoth, principal of the school. The hand-written magazine exhibition was part of the Golden Jubilee of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Payyoli and the teachers too participated wholeheartedly in the effort and assisted the students in every way. Posters of different types were hung on the trees on the school campus. The poet had some words of advice for the young friends on how to improve on their literary skills and also congratulated the students for their enthusiasm and enterprise in showcasing a rare endeavour.Parents and the general public too turned up in large numbers for the inaugural programme. Octogenarian Guru Chemancherry Kunhiraman Nair Kathakali exponent who was also invited to the inaugural function presented the Golden jubilee prize titled `Suvarnakshara prize' for the best magazine. Three prizes each were presented for the best magazines in each of the sections such as high school, higher secondary and vocational higher secondary.
