Gladiators in combat
COMPILED BY R. KRITHIKA
In a major find, the Italian police recovered a hidden cache of ancient Roman marble reliefs that showed lifelike scenes of gladiators in combat. Dating back to the first century B.C., 12 panels stolen from a tomb in the settlement of Lucus Feroniae were found in a garden near Fiano Romano, near Rome. Made of high quality Carrara marble, the reliefs are the brilliant depictions of gladiators fighting with swords and shields, surrounded by musicians. One dramatic panel shows a fighter stepping on the wrist of his opponent who is pleading for mercy. Anna Maria Moretti, superintendent for antiquities, told AP that the panels would be restored before being opened for public viewing.
