Caring for the environment

PAROMITA PAIN

A competition to voice their `eco concerns' saw enthusiastic response from students in five cities.

Henkel India organised a competition `Eco-Concerns and Sustainability — My Action Plan for a Better Tomorrow' on what ails nature today and how we can help.

Sixteen students from five centres, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad competed via video conferencing in the finals for the `Henkel Enviro Care' Award. Each of the finalists made an oral presentation on the topic.

The competition, open to classes X and XI, had participants writing a paper of about 2500 words on environmental issues. There was a competition organised for those who wrote their papers in Tamil.

Emphatic points

B. Kanimozhi from Chennai made a strong case against the waste of electricity and water while her competitor from Hyderabad, P. Akhila emphasised that industries should take safe steps for the disposal of their waste.

Most of the petitions concentrated on what the individual could do. From planting one tree in a lifetime to creating awareness among the illiterate, the petitioners were passionate about their ideals. The questions that came from the judges were tough and tested the validity of their ideas. The winners were selected based on the suggestions for a cleaner environment, their practicality in real life, and understanding of the subject.

In a closely fought battle, Sauptik Ghosh, X, from South Point High School in Kolkata, was awarded the `Henkel Enviro-Care award' and a cash prize of Rs.10, 000 for his innovative ideas on environmental issues.

Chennai wasn't far behind with B. Kanimozhi, XI, from Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, bagging the second place, while Ifkath Azima, X, Azra Public School, Hyderabad, came third.
