CHESS: Flying high
Viani Antonio D'Cunha, a sixth standard student of St. Aloysius Higher Primary School, Mangalore has finished runner-up in the 13th Rajanna Memorial State level open rapid chess tournament organised by C.V. Raman Chess Club at Samudaya Bhavan, Chamrajpet, Bangalore in the third week of February. Viani (FIDE rating 1946) exhibited his prowess in the open category despite being eligible to play in the age-group event.
Steady player
Viani challenged many higher ranked players in the state. The top seed and eventual champion N. Sanjay and Viani secured 7.5 points in nine rounds. However, Viani had to be content with the runners-up spot due to a better progressive score of Sanjay. Viani's performance warmed the hearts of Chess aficionados who were all praise for the maturity and poise shown by this lad while taking on players senior and more experienced than him. While Viani secured a fine win against Petros Valden (FIDE rating 2191) in the final round, he had a memorable run in the event beating players such as Kishen Gangolli, Vijayendra (FIDE rating 2116) and drawing against Thej Kumar (FIDE rating 2321), Sriram Sarja (2271) and N. Sanjay (FIDE rating 2339).
Viani remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. This latest performance by Viani indicated that the lad is set for greater heights.
