What does the colour red signify in a traffic signal? "Stop," said the children of Nikita Kidz World.
Dressed as traffic policemen, the children also explained that yellow is to halt vehicles and green is the go signal.
Model traffic signal
As part of the Road Safety week celebrations, a model traffic signal was created in the school premises to make children aware of road safety and traffic rules. The children also demonstrated how to use the zebra crossing to reach the other side of the road during busy traffic hours.
The children performed the role of a driver, passenger and traffic policeman to convey the message on road safety measures. They enacted a role-play of a traffic situation. One of the kids helped another kid dressed as an old lady to use the zebra crossing.
Educating the students on how they should be of help to the physically challenged people and the aged was also part of the traffic awareness programme.
Here is a list of "must dos" on road safety for children.
Always walk on the footpath only. On roads without footpath, walk on the extreme right hand side of the roads. Do not rush or run on the road.
Cross only at Zebra crossings, traffic signals. In places where such facilities do not exist, look for a safe place to cross.
Never cross a road at a corner, as the motorist taking the turn will not be able to see you on time.
Running across the road is a bad idea, as you may slip and fall.
Role of parents
The role of parents to ensure safety of their children during school journeys becomes vital. Parents must ensure that the children acquire the right knowledge and skills for the safe use of the roads.
They should teach their children the basic rules of the road, how to walk, look for signals, and cross the road.
School authorities and the teachers for their part impart to the children the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to be a safe road user by making them familiar with the rules of road.
