HANDLING THE RACKET: At the tennis camp
"This summer vacation sports seem to be a popular choice with tennis camps topping the list,"says Viswanath Gopi, coach at the NRI Tennis Academy. "Once they learn to hit the ball over the net and to put the ball at the right place, the interest is sustained," says Gopi. The NRI Tennis Academy has produced a few budding talents from the city. Six of its members - Vinay Kamineni, S.V. Abhishek, Vinayak Sharma, Sai Nishant, Sravan and Atika - have participated at the national level.
The maximum age to groom a child into a quality player is nine years, says Gopi. Beyond that age, it's difficult to mould them, he adds. Even as many boys and girls get the basics right in these camps, only a handful make it to the competitive level. More often, the training is too brief to be of any real benefit which means that even if some children have talent, they don't have the time or scope to develop it. They also face the task of finding a capable full-time coach and carefully plan their schedules and scout for financial support.
